When licensing for your project you will run into two main types of available footage, which are rights managed and royalty free. Filmsupply happens to only offer rights managed footage for some really great reasons, but below we break down the difference a bit more.
Rights Managed Footage
- Rights managed footage is still owned by the filmmakers and creatives involved with the shots
- The shots typically have been created for passion projects that the best filmmakers in the world create
- They are not overused and undervalued because they are licensed per shot, per project.
- Authenticity is at a high level because clips are a part of a larger passion project with creative direction
- Can use in the specific project that you licensed the shot(s) for
- Any talent within commercially cleared shots has signed a talent release
- The original creator is known, and is the one giving their licensor the right to license
- Price point scales with the project
Royalty Free Footage
- Anyone can purchase one time and use for the rest of time in whatever they would like
- Typically the company offering the footage is not the original creator, but now owns the footage
- Harder to find talent releases
- Typically has been used in more projects because of the free nature once clients purchase initially
- Price point is typically low
There are many reasons to choose either one, and sometimes one is a better fit for the budget of the project you are working on.
